The Board.

Added:
4 from Jim Stefani:
NJ OL Dante Weaver
TX DT De’Aires Cotton
FL RB Roy Finch
OH WR Jerald Robinson

New Information:
VA QB Phillip Sims. Fluff.
TX RB Lache Seastrunk. Closing in on his school’s all-time yardage record.
SC RB Marcus Lattimore. He already has 20 offers. Yeah, he’s kind of a big deal.
FL WR Commit Ricardo Miller. One of the fluffiest articles in history.
OH DE/LB Jamel Turner. He didn’t grow up with a favorite school, and considers himself a “free agent.”
NC DE Prince Shembo. NC State has offered (info in header).

Removed:
SC DT Kelcy Quarles. South Carolina commit.

Etc.:
MI QB Devin Gardner and RB Nick Hill played each other in the playoffs. Gardner’s team won, and is going to the state championship game.

Why would we go after a VA QB, when Michigan is flush with dual threat QB talent in 2010? THAT doesn’t make much sense to me.

    A few things:
    1) The board is intended to be inclusive, and have everyone who is a potential target. I have no idea if the staff is even actually in on Sims at all.

    2) Michigan really has 1 prospect next year (Devin Gardner) who is a true dual-threat QB that is UM-caliber and a fit for the system.

    3) I honestly have no insight as to the order of desire from Michigan’s end (especially this early in the process). I would assume Devin Gardner is a prohibitive #1 (though his interest in Michigan may be tempered by the fact that we’ll likely start a freshman next year), with Christian Green out of Florida being the second guy.

    Most importantly:
A coaching staff absolutely CANNOT afford to put all of their eggs in one basket, so to speak, and especially at the QB position where there is such a need for people who can adequately run the system, much less top prospects.

You have Mike Hull on the 2010 board at LB, but correct me if I’m wrong, he committed to Penn State a few days ago

“A coaching staff absolutely CANNOT afford to put all of their eggs in one basket, so to speak, and especially at the QB position where there is such a need for people who can adequately run the system, much less top prospects”

Uhhh… we have Beaver and Forcier as well… the eggs/basket analogy is not really relevant in this case.

I’m talking in regards to a specific recruiting class, and this post is about 2010.

Anon, i bet you 100 percent that RR does not one to settle on 1 QB in 2010. What if Gardner was his only option in 2010 and then he went to Ohio State or something? Then what? We get no QB for 2010. Guess what happens when you go years at a time without getting a QB in a class? You end up with a class of QB’s with expiring eligibility and left with 1 QB (Mallet) who transfers and leaves you with freshman and walk-ons. Do you want 2013 to roll around and have no QB’s left because we bet it all on Devin Gardner in 2010 (and he turned us down…for example) and have a 2012 QB or something starting as a RS Freshman or W/e. No. That’s why

    @griffin

Thepoint was that the state of michigan has NUMEROUS Dual Threat options at QB who may (or may not) have dreamed of going to Michigan since they were very young and could be a much easier pull than a kid from GA who would probably just end up being a waste of resources. I bet you 100%.

Also, if you think that a 5 star who transfers due to a new system being put in place is going to happen again in 2013 then you are crazy. nothing like that will happen again in the near future. Beaver or Forcier will be an eventual redshirt and Gardner can red shirt as well… meaning we will have planty of eggs in our basket. That was my point.

Uh, the point is, the “basket” is not the team, it’s the 2010 recruiting class (in which it’s pretty clear Michigan will need at least one QB). Why wouldn’t Michigan go after the best available players, instead of a bunch of MAC-level talents (at dual-threat QB) and Devin Gardner instate?

  9. Anonymous says...

So Robert Bolden is a MAC level talent? Wow, man, that is just ignorant. Moore too? Jeeze, I mean, I must be an idiot or something to think a guy who is a carbon copy of Devin Gardner is a “MAC level talent”, my apologies.

There are more talented kids in state next year than just Devin… I just thought you would like to know. I am not trying to kill your post, but I think you should have a look at the in state talent as well…

  10. Tim says...

Bolden isn’t a MAC-level talent, but he is not a true dual-threat QB either. He is a pro-style passer who can run a bit.

  11. Anonymous says...

I agree that he doesn’t play in a dual threat system. His numbers are most definately fake, but it says he runs a 4.5 which means he would be extremely capable in a dual threat system IMO. I don’t think Rich Rod (BBHN) would be dumb enough to overlook a kid of that talent level because he doesn’t play in a dual threat system in high school. That is all, I don’t want a pissing match. I like your blog and all that, good stuff.

  12. Tim says...

I’m not trying to be an asshole, I just disagree with your premise, which is essentially “we should go after instate prospects, instead of the best guys available.” I would prefer that the coaching staff goes for the best guys they can get, regardless of where they’re from.

On Bolden: I’ve seen him play several times over the past couple years. It’s not the OLSM offense that makes him a poor fit for the RR system. He doesn’t look comfortable running with the ball, and doesn’t throw well on the run. He’s more of a pro-style guy who can pick up a few yards when the pocket breaks down.

  13. Anonymous says...

Yea, my premise is not that we shouldn’t go after the best available. Obviously I would love to see Michigan turn into USC as far as recruiting, but for the most part we aren’t there yet. With a vein of high level talent in-state this year at QB, we should focus on getting the kids that could help us here, first IMO, rather than losing time, energy, possible future recruits by going after out of state kids.

It is very off putting to an in-state kid who has loved the Wolverines since childhood to have them going after an out of state kid before even loking into the in state kids (I realize RR may or may not have gone after this VA QB, but my point remains). This is all just my opinion. I realize we can and will recruit out of state and I am in no way claiming that to be a bad thing (for the most part the warm weather kids have a bit of an advantage in athleticism anyway). I am just saying we should look for gold in our backyard before going out to California or Florida or Virgina, etc. Make sense?

  14. Tim says...

Fair point, and I would assume (hope?) that the staff does their due diligence with instate guys.

  15. Griffin Fraley says...

@Anon…i didn’t mean that a kid years from now would transfer because of a system. But kids still transfer from established regimes all the time. My point was, you still need another QB in this class for when Focier/Beaver are gone or if they turn into busts, or if they get hurt, or if you can just flat out find someone better. And you can’t stick to just Gardner. You have to have a backup plan behind Gardner. And yes, I do believe Gardner is the only guy in this class out of Michigan who fits.
