Long Signs; Will be #1 Overall

Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long has been signed to a five-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, guaranteeing that he will be selected first overall in Saturday’s NFL draft. Long is the first Wolverine selected #1 overall since Tom Harmon in 1941(!). Current speculation is that Long’s prowess on Guitar Hero was the deciding factor for the Dolphins.

For analysis of the remaining Wolverines’ draft outlooks, check back here on Friday.

Khoury (Fr) Omameh (Fr)

Arriving in the fall:
Dan O’Neill, Rocko Khoury, Kurt Wermers, Ricky Barnum, Elliott Mealer, Patrick Omameh. Redshirts on the way for just about all of them except maybe O’Neill and whichever interior OL is most ready to play.

David Molk was out for most of the spring (with mono), but I think he’ll use summer camp as a springboard into a starting position. Though Michigan doesn’t lose anyone from this group, the departures of a few players mean that they are still a little thin at the position. Rodriguez likes to have around 16 linemen on the roster, and he will have 15 on the roster next year (including a couple who aren’t likely to ever have big contributions).

Class of ’09 Offensive Linemen
Name Measurables Rating Hometown School Offer? Timetable Player Notes Recruiting Notes
Xavier Nixon 6-6, 285 ***** Fayetteville, NC Jack Britt Offer Considered one of the top OT prospects. A basketball center, he is reknowned for his quick feet. HS coach fluff. Due to a mix-up, Rodriguez got his film late. Michigan is probably playing catch up on this one.
Marcus Hall 6-5, 295, 5.35 ***** Cleveland, OH Glenville Offer From Ted Ginn Sr.’s Glenville high Ginn had a beef with the Carr administration, will he send prospects to new-UM? Top 3 of OSU, USC, Illinois would imply otherwise.
Eric Shrive 6-7, 282, 5.10 ***** West Scranton, PA West Scranton Offer Deciding after 2008 Likely the midwest’s top OT. Film evaluation. Many consider Notre Dame a heavy favorite (went to their junior day 2-24). Local paper blog on Shrive’s recruitment. Maybe telling: midwest visits do not include UM.
Xavier Sua’filo 6-5, 275 **** Provo, UT Timpview Being recruited by a lot of top schools. ESPNU Under Armour game. He wants to take an unofficial to Michigan.
Chris Freeman 6-8, 315 **** Trotwood, OH Madison Offer He is also a PF prospect for basketball? I guess that means he is ridiculously athletic for his size, but… what? Michigan has the Trotwood-Madison connection in their favor
for this huge OT prospect, though he is the cousin of OSU LB Marcus Freeman. Florida is also hard on Freeman. He plans to attend several Michigan spring practices.
Chris Watt 6-4, 270 **** Glen Ellyn, IL Glenbard Offer pre-season decision Viscious interior prospect. Came to UM junior day. Just like everyone else in the country, he has been offered by Notre Dame (they may be the favorite) (like, seriously). He wants to stay within the midwest.
Quinton Washington 6-4, 320 **** Saint Stephen, SC Timberland Offer Currently listed at OT, though his measurables project him on the interior. Lists a lot of southern schools and Michigan.
Khalil Wilkes 6-4, 285 **** Jersey City, NJ St. Peter’s Likes playing in spread offenses. Has interest in Michigan. His dad played at Rutgers, and they can be considered the current favorite.
Zach Matthias 6-6, 305, 5.1 **** Hemlock, MI Hemlock He plays basketball at his size, which means he is likely a good athlete. An in-state semi-sleeper along the lines of Jake Long. Scholar-athlete as well. 1st Team all-conference as a junior. Expected to attend Michigan’s junior day.
Brennan Williams 6-6, 260, 5.2 *** West Roxbury, MA Catholic Memorial Jim Stefani noted that his dad is from Michigan and played at Toledo.
Tahir Basil 6-2, 250, 4.88 *** Philadelphia, PA Roman Catholic Good student, maybe not an elite OL prospect (but S&C could mold him into one).
Ricky Clemons 6-5, 305 *** Flint, MI Carman Ainsworth A little short to be a true OT. Could move inside in college. He’s already got the mass, it will likely need to be converted into muscle. Grew up a State fan, but went to his first CFB game for The Horror.
Zach Martin 6-5, 260, 5.10 *** Indianapolis, IN Bishop Chatard Offer? Right around tackle size. Michigan spring game visitor. Offer is not confirmed as yet.
Henry Conway 6-6, 295 *** Shaker Heights, OH Shaker Heights Not a big-time prospect, but he has good size. Tackle project. Michigan Spring Game visitor

Not a ton of need here. They will probably be able to hold out for a couple highly-ranked guys (1-2 tackles, 1-2 interior OL).

Arriving in the fall: Mike Martin (DT).

Michigan really needed some DEs in the 2008 class, and pulled none. They also lose three of their starting linemen to graduation, and the jury is still out on whether everyone else will stick it out.

Class of ’09 Defensive Tackles

William Campbell 6-6, 300 ***** Detroit, MI Cass Tech Surprisingly explosive for his girth. He was a big success at the Junior Army combine. He’ll be one of the top 2-3 DTs in 2009. Army game. Michigan’s first commit, on 6-21-07. He plans to take some visits, and may be considered a soft commit.

Chris Davenport 6-5, 320, 5.27 ***** Mansfield, LA Mansfield Offer September or October decision. One of the top DTs in the country. He attended LSU’s 2-23 junior day, and the Tigers are likely his favorite. USC other school in his top 2.
Josh Boyd 6-4, 280 **** Philadelphia, MS Philadelphia Signing day decision 2nd team all-state per Clarion Ledger.
Levi Brown 6-2, 320, 5.1 *** Bethlehem, PA Liberty A 1-tech tackle (Will Campbell is a likely 3-tech). HS teammate of DE prospect Braxton Isaac. Michigan may have need for one 1-tech in this class.

William Campbell is a great start. Michigan might want to snag another good DT (do they have enough depth to only grab one if he’s on a higher level?)

Devon Kennard 6-3, 230, 4.82 ***** Phoenix, AZ Desert Vista Offer Scout’s top defensive end. Army game.
Craig Drummond 6-5.5, 210 **** Chicago, IL Morgan Park Offer Pre-season decision. Visits after he wraps up ACT. Top 5 of M, IL, USC, Kstate, and Tennessee. Illinois is the leader.
Craig Roh 6-5, 230, 4.60 **** Scottsdale, AZ Chaparral Offer Among Jim Stefani’s top DE prospects for Michigan. Has offers from lots of top programs, despite only being a 3-star on Scout at this time.
Corey Adams 6-3, 275, 4.86 **** Scottsdale, AZ Saguaro Offer Decision after 5 officials. Big DE prospect who will have to stay in shape or move to DT. ESPNU game.
Chris Bonds 6-4, 275, 4.8 **** Columbia, SC Richland NE Offer USCal and USCar top 2, Michigan in top 5
Juantez Hollins 6-4, 265 **** Aliquippa, PA Aliquippa Currently a DE, could grow into an interior OL (or even OT) prospect. Notre Dame is interested in him. Michigan was in-school in January ’08.
Tyrone Ezell 6-4, 255, 4.7 5 *** Munhall, PA Steel Valley Not very polished (only played football for a couple years) or strong (never really lifted weights) but has a lot of potential to become dominant. Also a high school wrestler. He has said Notre Dame is his dream school.
Jack Lippert 6-5, 225, 4.75 *** Harrisburg, PA Central Dauphin Very small for his speed. Will he be able to add more mass without dropping his quicks?
Andre Civil 6-5, 250, 4.85 *** Brooklyn, NY Sheepshead Bay Currently interested in Syracuse and Rutgers He wants to stay in the northeast, and he may be dropped soon unless he develops into a top prospect.
Braxton Isaac 6-4, 240 *** Bethlehem, PA Liberty Interest throughout the midwest and LSU
Trevor Foy 6-7, 235 *** Louisville, KY St. Xavier Went to multiple Michigan FB games in the fall. Also has apparently strong interested in ND, as he went to their 2-24 junior day.
Davon Custis 6-4, 235 *** Columbus, OH St. Francis DeSales A high school teammate of Patrick Omameh. Visited Michigan in the spring.

Michigan has a ton of need here, and don’t be surprised if they grab 2 or 3.

First things first. Our boy RJ asks:

“The stat that you always hear preseason is returning starters. How much does this stat actually predict the outcomes of a season? Just because players haven’t had game experience doesn’t mean they won’t breakout. Good starters have to come from somewhere before they start.”

Well, returning starters have two advantages over anyone else on the team:
1) They were good enough to start last year (over any seniors who may have been on the team)
2) They have in-game experience.
The first part is self-explanatory, but it is the second part that is more important. Playing experience is huge moving from high school to college because the quality of opponent and speed of the game are faster, as well as fan interaction and pressure. A guy who has played before at least knows what it is like playing before 100,000+, and has experience either channeling that out or harnessing it to his advantage. A first-time player doesn’t know what that is like.

In addition, players can break out from non starting roles (or even as freshmen). But the potential for a freshman is anywhere from 0 to 100% of what you expect. An experience player has already shown what he can do in a game, so there are fewer surprises (positively and negatively).

Question numero dos is from Sam:

“whats the deal with william campbell? he says he is committed but that he is going to go on visits? that doesnt sound like a commit to me! thanks for your answer.”

I agree with you. If a player commits, but says he is going to look around, then I don’t consider it a commit at all. Rather, it is a strong lean. Nobody is truly committed until they sign the LOI, but there are definitely degrees of commitment. A guy who won’t take any other visits and actively recruits for your team is obviously most committed with guys who tell the national services that they are “kinda committed” to the school of their choice at the other end of the spectrum.

As far as Campbell in particular, I don’t think there is much to worry about. Here is a kid from Detroit who hasn’t had a ton of opportunity to see the world. Now he is given free trips to South Beach and L.A. based on his athletic talents. Can you hold it against him for taking up those offers?

Rich Rod has said he will recruit guys to the end, regardless of commitments. While most took that to mean he wouldn’t have a problem continuing to recruit Shaw and Roundtree last year, it also applies to guys committed to the Wolverines who are still looking around. If Campbell ends up going elsewhere, it isn’t because Rodriguez was sleeping on the job.

Post-spring Summary: Receiving Corps

TE WR WR Slot
Butler (rJr)
OR
Massey (rSr)
Mathews (Jr) Hemingway (So) Clemons (So)
Webb (So) Savoy (rJr) Stonum (Fr) Horn (rFr)
Watson (rFr) Babb (So) Rogers (So)

Arriving in the fall:
Kevin Koger & Brandon Moore (TE), Roy Roundtree (WR), Michael Shaw (also an RB) & Terrence Robinson & Martavious Odoms (Slot). All three slots are essentially guaranteed to see PT. Roundtree might get some spot duty, along with perhaps one of the TEs (not likely). I foresee Redshirts for both TEs and Roundtree.

Clemons could be a monster in the slot, but the position is too important in this offense to have just one body there. He also has a skill set that transfers to outside receiver so he’ll likely see time at both positions. Earnly enrollee Darryl Stonum had an impressive spring, and will probably see significant PT in the fall.

This position group loses nobody except perpetually-injured tight end Mike Massey. For recruiting, they will look for a couple outside WRs and apparently 7,000 slot guys (with two potentially committed in Teric Jones and Fitzgerald Toussaint).

Class of ’09 Wide Receivers
Name Measurables Rating Hometown School Offer? Timetable Player Notes Recruiting Notes
Marlon Brown 6-5, 200 ***** Memphis, TN Harding Academy Offer After signing day 2009. Big outside WR prospect. He has a good off-the-field reputation. USC is strong after him. Michigan is in his top group. Basketball may play a role in his decision. Top 15 schools includes Michigan.
Rueben Randle 6-3, 195, 4.5 ***** Bastrop, LA Bastrop Offer Outside prospect. Everyone who’s anyone is on Randle. LSU has the momentum and in-state status.
Andre Debose 5-11, 176, 4.4 **** Sanford, FL Seminole A really fast guy who plays QB in high school, but probably not in college. The sort of guy who could fill in if necessary. Track results. Has a couple teammates that he might like to go to school with, and Florida State is the favorite for the three of them. Or is Miami?
Bryce McNeal 6-1, 180, 4.46 **** Minneapolis, MN Breck Offer. Army Game Decision. A top performer at the Army Junior Combine. GopherHole interview. Seems high on Michigan (in his top 2 with Minnesota?). He and his girldfriend may go to school together (she is a BBall prospect). GopherHole covers recruiting.
Braxton Lane 5-11, 190, 4.31 **** Tyrone, GA Sandy Creek Offer Perfect fit at the slot position. Also a baseball prospect who may play in college. He won’t rush it, but he won’t hold out until Signing Day either.
Todd Thomas 6-4, 180, 4.55 **** Beaver Falls, PA Beaver Falls Beaver Falls Michigan coaches have been in his school. Outside receiver prospect with his size. He reports a Michigan offer.
James Jackson 5-11, 173, 4.31 **** Grand Ledge, MI Grand Ledge Offer A blazer who could play WR or CB once he gets to college. He seems like a good fit at slot. He wants to do track and football in college. Conventional wisdom had him wanting to leave the state, though that was prior to the RR administration coming in with an offense better suited to his skill set.
Keenan Davis 6-3, 190 **** Cedar Rapids, IA Washington Former Michigan WR Adrian Arrington’s alma mater. Going to Kansas spring game.
Josh Gordon 6-4, 210, 4.5 *** Houston, TX Lamar A definite outside receiver with his size, but he has speed as well. He grew up a Michigan fan (his family is from Michigan).
Fritz Rock 6-0, 188, 4.55 *** Plymouth, MN Wyzata A top performer at the Army Junior Combine. Life story. Football story. Likes Notre Dame early (2-24 junior day).
Nu’Keese Richardson 5-9, 165 **** Pahokee, FL Pahokee Claims offer. Tiny slot WR who was a HS teammate of Martavious Odoms. He grew up a Michigan fan.
Cameron Gordon 6-3, 190 *** Melvindale, MI Melvindale post-visits decision Jump-ball kind of guy. Was impressive at 2007 UM camp. Transferring to Inkster for 2008 season. Prefers receiver over DB. Mutual Notre Dame, MSU, OSU interest. Wants to stay in the midwest.
Dennis Thames 6-0, 195 *** Louisville, MS Louisville Offer His uncle is Marcus Thames of the Detroit Tigers. He is a teammate of dual-threat(ish) QB Clayton Moore. He was a first team all state selection in 2007 according to the Clarion Ledger. Thinks Michigan is close to offering.

Michigan will need 2-3 slot guys (with 2 potentially committed already, in Teric Jones and Fitzgerald Toussaint (see RB)), and about 2 outside receivers. James Jackson seems like another slot-type guy that could potentially end up with Michigan, though he appears to be digging OSU of late. Bryce McNeal is currently the strongest shot at an outside receiver.

Class of ’09 Tight Ends
Name Measurables Rating Hometown School Offer? Timetable Player Notes Recruiting Notes
Dion Sims 6-5, 240 **** Orchard Lake, MI Saint Mary’s Offer Many I’ve spoken to like him more as a DE (he plays rush LB in HS). He is a big scorer for the OLSM basketball team, and is also interested in that sport for college. His dad apparently works for UM in some capacity.
Terrell Mitchell 6-5, 210 *** Powder Springs, GA McEachern Offer He claims that he has a couple of SEC offers, so he is no slouch. Probably a TE or DE in college. Something tells me we don’t need any more TEs, so his offer is probably as a big WR or DE. Michigan is his favorite, over South Carolina.
Reid Fragel 6-7, 255, 4.88 *** Grosse Pointe, MI GP South His size intrigues me. At his height, I wonder if he could put on enough weight to become a very athletic OT. He’s visited Notre Dame a lot (2-24 junior day). His dad played at State, and his brother played for State’s TE coach at Miami. Notre Dame, Michigan , Northwestern current top 3.

If Fragel were to commit, he probably wouldn’t end up at TE. Sims and Mitchell are big TEs with WR speed, though I still maintain that Sims’s best future position would be DE (where he could be an absolute terror).

Post-spring Summary: Offensive Backs

With spring practice finally concluded, it’s time to start looking at the team for 2008. First, the depth chart, then recruiting needs.

QB Speed RB Power RB MX
Threet (fFr) Brown (Jr) Minor (Jr)
OR
Grady (rJr)
Moundros (rSo)
Sheridan (W – rSo) Horn (rFr) Helmuth (So)
Cone (rSo)

Here in the fall:
Justin Feagin (QB), Sam McGuffie & Michael Shaw (Speed back), Mike Cox (Power back). Feagin will almost definitely play a big role on this team, with McGuffie and Shaw getting PT as well. Look for a redshirt out of Cox.

With the new offense, things are going to get a bit confusing, because there will be some definite overlap between speed backs and slot receivers, and they currently occupy different position groups in these handy charts.

Anyway, Michigan loses nobody from this position group to graduation, though there may be some possibility for early entry (an RB that has a huge year – which isn’t all that likely) or other attrition (such as a Cone transfer). This means that the need is somewhat limited in recruiting. Michigan will need 2 quarterbacks, both dual-threat, and preferably have one of them enroll for the winter semester. They can always use more speedy guys, especially since they can double as slot receivers. It is unlikely that there will be a need for bigger running backs or fullbacks.

Class of ’09 Dual-Threat QBs
Name Measurables Rating Hometown School Offer? Timetable Player Notes Recruiting Notes
Kevin Newsome 6-3, 215, 4.40 **** Chesapeake, VA Western Branch Offer Early Enroll He has been described as Tebow-like, but I’d think he probably has more speed, as he is an indoor track all-american in 60m hurdles. More track. Many consider VT the favorite for Newsome, especially with Tajh Boyd committing to WVU. If he wants to be a Mountaineer, he won’t play QB.
Eugene Smith 6-3, 180, 4.65 **** Miramar, FL Miramar Offer His dad went to Miami of Florida. He is considered more of a pro-style QB. Rodriguez has made it clear that Florida will be a big priority for new-UM recruiting. Not clear how badly he’ll want Smith, however.
Morgan Newton 6-5, 205, 4.50 **** Carmel, IN Carmel He is the apparent star of his high school basketball team, which also includes Michigan signee Stu Douglass. He is a fast pro-style(ish) guy who can run if pressured. Many Michigan fans really like this guy. He could be a fallback or 2nd QB (less suited for the Rodriguez offense). Notre Dame is on him as well.
Aaron Murray 6-2, 200 **** Tampa, FL H.H. Plant Early enroll White guy who is turning from a passing runner into a passer with good mobility. Florida is widely considered the favorite, and Murray is a lot like their current starter (Tebow). Michigan expects to recruit Florida well under Rich Rod. Elite 11 participant.
Tate Forcier 6-1, 190, 4.63 **** San Diego, CA Scripps Ranch Offer Post-unofficials (summer) decision, early enrollment Former Wolverine Jason Forcier (loved the school, didn’t get along with Scot Loeffler, and is now at Stanford) is his brother, and is
encouraging Tate to look at Michigan.
PSU and Oregon listed as favorites?
Shavodrick Beaver 6-4, 200, 4.5 **** Wichita Falls, TX Rider Springs Offer Pre-season His team may play no ESPN2 this fall. Speddy, shifty guy who has good mechanics. He was ready to commit (to TCU) until he got a Michigan offer. When an offer from a particular school changes your whole paradigm, there’s a good chance they’re among your favorites.
Donavan Tate 6-3, 195 **** Cartersville, GA Cartersville Offer HS QB/DB. His Michigan offer is actually as a QB. He is a baseball prospect as well, who wants to do both in college. All of his other schools have offered him at safety.
Jordan Luallen 6-3, 187, 4.75 **** Greenwood, IN Center Grove A white boy who is slower than IU’s Kellen Lewis, but still compares himself to the IU signal-caller. His high school runs the Wing-T. He is also a track athlete. IU really likes Luallen. Georgia is his favorite, despite no offer. He is swinging through the Peach State this weekend.
Clayton Moore 6-2, 205 *** Louisville, MS Louisville Maybe early enroll Passer who can run. He is also a baseball prospect who may opt for that route instead. He was a 2nd team all state 2007 selection according to the Clarion Ledger. Michigan’s Mississippi presence has increased greatly with the addition of coach Hopson.
Kolby Gray 6-2, 180, 4.58 *** Houston, TX Cy-Falls Threw for 222 yards in the McGuffie ESPN2 game. He carries his HS team. He bout to blow up, ya’ll. So far, mostly smaller offers.
Thomas Gordon 6-0, 170 *** Detroit, MI Cass Tech Could be a depth player if Michigan gets a super QB, or move to a different position, etc. At least one of his teammates will be heading to Ann Arbor. He is probably Michigan’s if they want him.
Darwin Rogers 6-4, 205 *** Chicago, IL Leo He was hurt most of his junior year, and can really climb up the board with combine/camp performances. His class at Leo HS appears to have a lot of D1 prospects. Has a couple teammates already committed to Illinois.
Stephon Gilmore 6-0, 175, 4.5 *** Rock Hill, SC South Pointe Offer Probably a #2-type guy that may come to Michigan for the opportunity to play QB, but won’t scare off Newsome or Forcier. He is a QB/S who runs the spread in HS. Most of his other offers are at S. Tennessee is his favorite.

Michigan’s top prospect is likely Kevin Newsome, who is a near-perfect fit for the offensive scheme. He is also a pretty serious student, and is considering an early enrollment. After that, Tate Forcier and Shavodrick Beaver are the next prospects. Beaver is an explosive athlete as well, and Michigan fans would be ecstatic to gain his commitment as well. It is unlikely that Michigan will be able to convince 2 top-top guys to commit (this isn’t USC, after all), so one elite prospect (of the aforementioned group of three) and another depth player/project (perhaps Thomas Gordon from Cass Tech or Darwin Rogers from Chicago Leo) would be a realistic goal.

Teric Jones 5-10, 190, 4.39 *** Detroit, MI Cass Tech Ran a fast 40 at Army junior combine, and was considered top-10 there. Could fit in the slot or backfield in the RichRod Offense. Less power and experience than Baker/Caper, but more speed. He needs the most work, but has the most upside. Michigan’s 3rd commit, on 3-29-08
Fitzgerald Toussaint 5-10, 185 **** Youngstown, OH Liberty RB/Slot. Teammate of Julius Ferrell and Isaiah Bell. Michigan’s fifth commit, 4-18-08.

Both of these guys can be RB/slot players.

Class of ’09 Running Backs
Name Measurables Rating Hometown School Offer? Timetable Player Notes Recruiting Notes
David Oku 5-9, 174 **** Oklahoma City, OK Albert Offer October 10th (his birthday) or sometime in November. Is he an RB or slot WR in college? He is Devine-like. Down to a top 6 of Michigan, OSU, USC, FSU, Tennessee, and Illinois.
Ronnie Wingo 6-2, 205, 4.49 **** St. Louis, MO St. Louis University RB/CB prospect (he would be a BIG CB). 10.78 100m He visited Michigan in the fall. Illinois is a major player for his services. Dad committed to MSU but didn’t play there. Mizzou junior day visitor.
Jordan Hall 5-9, 180 **** Jeannette, PA Jeannette Offer Early decision. A two-way player who could also be a defender or slot receiver in college. Visited OSU with Terrelle Pryor, will Pryor’s choice influence Hall?
Tavon Austin 5-9, 170, 4.49 **** Baltimore, MD Dunbar Offer Short, speedy guy. Sounds familiar, no? Maryland wants him. They are his co-leader with UVa.
Darrell Mason 6-0, 209 **** Youngstown, OH Ursuline RB/Athlete. Rich Rodriguez visited his school in January ’08 on the way back from Pennsylvania. Ohio State is pretty big favorite.
Jazsman Mitchell 5-9, 170 *** Tyler, TX Lee A little guy who is probably a slot WR prospect. LSU and Texas are cleaning up East Texas this year…
Desmond Scott 5-9, 179 *** Durham, NC Hillside Jim Stefani notes that he would be a good fit for the Rich Rodriguez spread.
David Wilson 5-9, 170 *** Danville, Va George Washington Offer?
Hersey Jackson 6-1, 215, 4.6 *** Allendale, MI Allendale A bigger, bruising back. Interesting to see if he might be receptive to adding weight to become an MX back in the Rodriguez offense. He is unlikely to have feature-back speed at a high-BCS level. Attended Michigan’s junior day.
Vincent Smith 5-9, 170 *** Pahokee, FL Pahokee HS teammate of Wolverine Martavious Odoms.

With two speedy guys already in the fold, Michigan may start to slow down at the RB position, unless they are projected to both be slot players. Michigan may be done, unless a top guy wants to commit. If they want a power back or MX, Hersey Jackson could be the guy, though I’m not sure there is much interest from either party.

Dual-Barrel Mailbag

2 questions this time around. The first comes from the ever-curious RJ, and it relates to slot receivers:

What makes all these small fast guys work better in the slot? It’s seems like fast running backs are almost interchangeable with this position.

The point of the slot position is to have guys who can get the ball in space, and do something with it from there. This means making a guy or two miss, or running over a guy, or just outsprinting people to the endzone. Mismatches are the name of the game, and these speedy small guys creates a speed mismatch against linebackers and even some defensive backs.

However, the small speedy guy isn’t the only type of player who can work out in the slot. Tight ends create mismatches as well, by being bigger than safeties, and (sometimes) faster than linebackers. They are able to make things happen by being a physical force from the slot. Toney Clemons is a physical specimen with near-TE size, but good speed and shakes like a smaller player, which makes him a monster in the slot.

As far as being interchangeable with running backs, that isn’t a bad observation. A lot of slot guys were scatback-type RBs in high school, whose speed is good, but size is lacking to take the beating that a running back will get in college. A lot of Michigan’s recruits at the position can be multiple-position players.

Next question comes from an anonymous e-mailer, relating to coaching clinics:

what is the point of coaching clinics? it seems like the coaches are just giving away their secrets. i heard that michigan state even sent some scouts to michigan’s clinic. what is the benefit of these clinics?

Well, the clinics are held with an intended audience of high schools coaches. While Michigan State’s coaches may have been at the clinic, Coach Rod has always been very open with his system, and he doesn’t fear that opponents will crack the system. College coaches are always traveling to other schools to swap ideas.

So now that we know the clinics are for the benefit of high school coaches, what does Michigan get out of it? They build a rapport with the high school coaches, and happy coaches will be more likely to send their top players to colleges that they have a good relationship with. It’s one way that college coaches can make inroads in recruiting.

The clinics also help develop future talent that will be able to run Michigan’s system. Teaching the zone-read offense to high school coaches means that more high schools in the state of Michigan (and Ohio, and wherever else the coaches come from to attend the clinic) will be running this offense. This means that players will be in the right positions for a transition to Michigan, and they will be more comfortable running the system by the time they get into school. It breaks down like this: if a lot of high schools are running pro-style offenses, there will be more dropback quarterbacks, blocking fullbacks, and road-grading offensive linemen developed in the high school ranks. If a lot of high schools run the zone-read, there will be more scrambling QBs and slot receivers to come out of the high school ranks, (more) ready to play in college.

Thanks for the questions, guys. Keep sending them and I’ll keep doing my best to answer them.

A couple quick notes

Chris Graham’s sister tragically dies in a house fire. Jacqueline Love was a single mother, and donation information to support her daughter can be found in the article.

Rich Rod’s Morgantown digs up for sale.

By the way, since I hadn’t said this yet, the Yost series has been condensed to 5 parts, not 8.

Potential QB Transfer?

Current Texas backup QB Sherrod Harris may be considering a transfer, according to several sources, including the Dallas Morning News. Harris is a true sophomore who would have to sit one year, and be eligible to play in 2009 and 2010. A likely target would be Michigan, with an offense that fits his skills and a dearth of quarterbacks.

Harris is an exception student-athlete, who graduated with a high school GPA of 3.96. He was a run-pass threat in high school, described as similar to Antonio Bass (slightly more developed as a passer, with slightly less athleticism). At Texas, he has been limited due to injury and depth chart, and has yet to attempt a pass (despite playing in two games in fall 2007).

Harris is not allowed to contact school of interest until he receives his release. Texas coach Mack Brown stated that if any player approaches him regarding transfer, a release will be granted.
