Bo Interview, 1994

Enjoy

Programming Update and tidbits

Coming this afternoon: Michigan State Preview.
Coming sometime this week: A classic Bo interview (“classic” in this case meaning “old,” not “something seen by people other than those who lived in the dorms circa 1994”).
Coming Sunday: The podcast (like usual, but this one that I’m particularly excited about).

For Newsome-worriers: Rest assured (for now). More in the Friday recruiting update.

Jim Stefani has a bit more on DeQuinta.

An interesting discussion that took place in the comments last week:
Why is Indiana having recruiting success in Michigan?
Paul theorized thusly:

I wonder if that means that MSU is getting better players outside of Michigan so they don’t have to pick up the crumbs or if MSU is just losing its grip on said crumbs.

I think it’s neither. Pretty much all of the guys from Michigan who have committed to the Hoosiers either would never have gotten a High-level BCS offer (sorry Indiana), such as Kenny Watkins and Jamonne Chester, or are sleepers who would have had to wait a while for even an MSU offer, like Charles Chapman and Jeremy Gainer.

The only difference between this year and past years is that Indiana’s recruiting class is filling up earlier, so they can grab these sleepers before better offers come, or snatch the other guys away from the jaws of MAC schools.

From The Archives…

Going through the old WOLV tapes, I finally found the original masters of the Shomari and Sean O’Neill Show. In their 1997-98 season they interviewed Charles Woodson a number of times. This episode includes an interview with the soon to be Heisman Trophy winner at Good Time Charlie’s slightly before the Ohio State Game.

In case you didn’t hear, he ordered the monster order of fries…

Also, I resubmitted it to iTunes, apparently it rejected it last time. If you want to manually add the podcast feed to your iTunes copy this:

Select Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast and paste the URL. It should then automatically update each week.

Kevin Newsome Track Bonanza

Those who follow Michigan recruiting are likely aware that top quarterback commit Kevin Newsome is an elite track athlete. Newsome was an indoor All-American in the 60m hurdles, and now he is a state champ in outdoor track as well.

Newsome’s Western Branch team won the state title, thanks in part to Newsome’s victory in the 100m hurdle event. If simply reading about Newsome’s track exploits isn’t gratifying enough for you, take the time to indulge yourself in video of his championship performance:

Newsome is in the 5th lane, wearing dark blue with white compression shorts. Note the fact that he’s twice the size of most of the kids he’s running against.

Newsome also gave an interview to Milestat.com, available here. He doesn’t say anything that could be considered directly relevant to football, but it’s always nice to hear from Michigan commits to get an idea of what they are like as people.

Congratulations to Kevin, and we look forward to seeing him in Ann Arbor… though if he plans to enroll early, it does mean he’ll have to forgo track his senior year.

In news on other commits…
Newsome’s QB counterpart was named City Athlete of the Year. Fitzgerald Toussaint has missed most of track season with an injury. Free update on 2008 JT Floyd from Scout’s SC site.

A Few Photos from the UK Game

I took some pictures at the beginning of the game of the atmosphere. The combination of being pretty far away from the action, not having a telephoto lens, the sky looking like it was ready to open at any time and my desire to enjoy the game kept me from taking more pictures.

I went to the game on Saturday against Arizona. I didn’t make it out to the UK game today and it doesn’t look like there’s a great opportunity for another chance against Arizona (currently 11 – 6 Wildcats). I’ll post a recap on Monday.

Without further adieu… pictures:

Quarterbacks

In case you were worried about Kevin Newsome’s speed, check out this video of his 4×100 team winning the large school division at the Penn Relays.

Newsome is the anchor leg in lane 2(? second from nearest at the finish line, the guy who wins). He brings his team the victory.

Also, according to Sam Webb on today’s edition of the Michigan Insider on WTKA, there may be other good QB news this week. Tate Forcier or Shavodrick Beaver may announce for Michigan this week.

Thanks to frequent commenter RJ for the tip.
